We are very pleased to announce that our senior deckhand, Gavin Smith, who has been with the ship for about two years, has passed both his written and oral exams for Marine Engine Driver 2 Certificate of Competency. Gavin deserves extra congratulations not only for the superb effort he put into his studies, but also for passing his exams while he had a serious head cold. It should be noted that when the other crew heard of Gavin's success, they erupted in a collective, spontaneous cheer. Well done, Gav!
Gavin says he really liked the air conditioning unit and looks forward to learning more about it. He noted that a lot of the course was dedicated to making the students aware of all the systems found in the ship for safety reasons, but that many would require more advanced study to be able to do actual work and repairs on them.
A MED II Certificate will allow Gavin to act as Chief Engineer on a vessel with propulsion power <750 kW in the Exclusive Economic Zone, or Second Engineer on a vessel with propulsion power <1500 kW, in the EEZ.
