The Annual Youth Leadership Challenge
2016 Youth Leadership Challenge applications will open on Friday, 17th of June 2016!
The Annual Youth Leadership Challenge (YLC) is a joint initiative between The Windeward Bound Trust and the Rotary Club of Hobart, with additional collaboration with the Migrant Resource Centre of Southern Tasmania. The YLC promotes understanding, inclusivity, and community by bringing together 20 young people of vastly different backgrounds for a ten-day voyage aboard the STV Windeward Bound, and giving them the opportunity to connect and grow with one another in both the short and long term.
Ten of the participants are positive Australian youth with an interest in mentoring, selected with help from Rotary Club of Hobart for their leadership potential, and ten are recently settled New Tasmanian youth from refugee backgrounds whom the Migrant Resource Centre has determined would most benefit. Youth mentors are required to go through an application process, and fundraise to offset the cost of the New Tasmanians’ participation.
All participants engage in Sail Training activities that are a part of Windeward Bound’s standard programs. The youth learn how to navigate, steer the ship, handle the sails, and climb aloft. Over the course of the voyage, the necessity of communication and teamwork combined with opportunities for stepping into leadership positions result in a truly life-changing experience for all involved. The common response is summarized well by a recent participant: “The past two weeks have greatly changed me in terms of how I see the world, its people, and my own dreams.”
